About
Born in 1979 in Akron, Ohio, Kurt Kotheimer grew up just blocks from the home of noted abolitionist John Brown. He started playing guitar at age eight and shortly thereafter switched to the double bass as part of a scheme to get more gigs. While studying music in college he had the privilege of playing with great improvisers such as Chris Jonas, Jackson Moore, and Joe Maneri. After relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, he became an active member in its jazz and improvised music scenes and toured in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. During this time he also realized several musical projects with longtime collaborator, multi-instrumentalist, Joshua Smith. Since recently re-relocating to Northeast Ohio he has been exploring the union of algorithmic composition, computer music, and improvisation.
